At Why We Write, students experience stories in a new way.

For stories are the flagships that take students on enchanting journeys.

We use unique approaches to build listening and creativity skills that help       students create their own treasure maps.

These maps take many forms, such as a poem, a page of doodles, a model.

We rely on supporters to continue our workshops and camps located across our  Commonwealth. We unofficially call ourselves Unbridled Creativity.

Look at the magic we have created so far in fiscal year 2025-26

(and we still have a few more months) :

  • 400 students experienced the magic of expanding listening, creativity, and writing skills.
  • 7 different programs offered:  Cool School™ workshops (Revolutionary Girl Dreaming, Appalachia Girl Dreaming, and Glisten: The Sweaty, Sparkling Brain); INKspire Creative Camps; school fairs; library classes; and college essay workshops
  • 1,200 people reached during community programs like I Gave Gratitude.
  • 10 Kentucky counties served, with expansion to 20 in 2026–2027.
  • Countless people read our first book. A Pencil Grows in Kentucky shares the poetry of 70 young women in Kentucky Appalachia. We were thrilled to be part of the 2025 Kentucky Book Fair. Available at selected bookstores and on Amazon.
